On Monday, the House passed a resolution which calls for the Biden administration to remain committed to “implementing the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act of 2019,” a law that imposed crippling sanctions on Syria that are designed to prevent the country from rebuilding after years of war. The vote was 412-2, with the only dissenting votes coming from Republicans Thomas Massie and Marjorie Taylor Greene, demonstrating once again that these congresspersons, frequently vilified by Democrats as demonic right-wingers, are actually more “progressive” than their opponents across the aisle. The Biden administration is disingenuously claiming to have lifted “earthquake-related” sanctions, but the sanctions which remain have effectively blocked all earthquake relief.
