Zambian President Commissions New Dam, Exemplifying China’s BRI

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema commissioned the Kafue Gorge Lower Hydropower Station March 24, by switching on the fifth and last of the dam’s five 150 megawatt generators, bringing power-needy Zambia 750 MW of electricity.

China played a role in the dam’s construction, with Sinohydro Corporation Limited constructing the hydroelectric dam, at a contract price reportedly of $2 billion. Two of China’s big policy banks, the Exim Bank of China and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, financed 85% of the project at an inexpensive interest rate; Zambia put up by itself the rest of the financing.

Some 3,000 Zambian workers constructed the dam. One can see about 25 of them lining a dam wall at the commissioning ceremony: most are smiling and waving to honor the accomplishment. (http://en.people.cn/n3/2023/0327/c90000-10227471.html)
