At Upcoming BRICS Meeting, BRICS Expansion on the Agenda

The foreign ministers of the BRICS nations will hold their next meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, on June 2nd and 3rd this year, in preparation for the upcoming BRICS summit in August. At the June meeting they will reportedly focus on the topic of enlargement. According to Bloomberg News, Anil Sooklal, South Africa’s representative to the BRICS, said, “What will be discussed is the expansion of BRICS and the modalities of how this will happen…. We are getting applications to join every day.”

According to TV BRICS, Sooklal said that the BRICS has received a total of 19 requests for membership to the group. Of the 19 requests for membership, 13 are formal, and six are informal, Sooklal said.
