The EU’s European Parliament on March 15 called for more sanctions on Belarus, citing its crackdown on dissidents and its entering into a defense arrangement with Russia. The Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, responded on March 29, in a statement to United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres. In the statement, they say: “The decision approved by the European Parliament directly contradicts the Charter of the United Nations and the principles of international law. A misanthropic policy bordering on extreme nationalism is being promoted through pressure on our country using political platforms, sanctions, blackmail, and information-centered and psychological terrorism….
“We do not need external moralizing. We know how to live our lives ourselves. Belarus unwaveringly follows the path of the pursuit of peace, good neighborliness and creative action. Our country is developing in accordance with laws that are fully consistent with the fundamental interests of the Belarusian people, while respecting all those who are open to a constructive dialogue with us, and we have the right to expect the same from them.
