China broadcaster CCTV reported this morning that President Xi Jinping had a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy today, “at the invitation of the latter,” in the words of China’s Foreign Ministry statement. The Foreign Ministry said “The two sides exchanged views on China-Ukraine relations and the Ukraine crisis.”
In what is generating the most international attention, the Ministry announced: “China will send the Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Eurasian Affairs to Ukraine and other countries to have in-depth communication with all parties on the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis. China has sent multiple batches of humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and will keep providing help to the best of its ability.” It did not give any timetable for which Chinese representatives would be visiting Ukraine and the other countries. The Foreign Ministry noted that Zelenskyy “welcomed China’s important role in restoring peace and seeking a diplomatic solution to the crisis.” (https://www.fmprc.gov.cn/mfa_eng/zxxx_662805/202304/t20230426_11066785.html)
