A call, “Make Peace! Armistice and Common Security Now!” issued on March 31 in Germany was initiated by Peter Brandt, a historian and the son of former Berlin Mayor and 1970s Chancellor Willy Brandt, who launched the policy of détente with Russia’s leader Brezhnev. Along with Peter Brandt, initiators include Reiner Hoffman, former chairman of the DGB national labor federation; Reiner Braun, head of the International Peace Office; and Michael Müller, Federal Chairman of the Friends of Nature.
In one key passage, the call states (in translation): “It is crucial to stop the escalation of the war [between Ukraine and Russia]. We encourage the Federal Chancellor, together with France, to persuade Brazil, China, India and Indonesia in particular to mediate in order to achieve a ceasefire quickly. That would be a necessary step to stop the killing and explore avenues for peace. Only then can the path to a common security order in Europe be paved.” (https://frieden-und-zukunft.de/2023-04-01_aufruf-frieden-schaffen/ )
