Syria Reconciliation: Will the U.S. Leave Itself Out in the Cold?

With most Southwest Asian countries talking with Syria and re-establishing diplomatic connections or moving to do so, will the U.S. isolate itself from this world trend by continuing to insist on Assad’s ouster?

With China’s brokering of Saudi-Iranian rapprochement, and Russia moving ahead towards achieving peace between Syria and Turkiye, the U.S. and EU are making fools of themselves by continuing to call for implementation of UN resolution 2254—for “free and fair” elections—as a precondition for a change in policy.

The United States could usefully work towards brokering an understanding between Kurds and the Damascus government on its way out, but it must in any event end completely its military involvement in the sovereign territory of Syria.
