A group of six African countries, apparently led by South Africa, are preparing a peace initiative between Russia and Ukraine. The first step will be visits to Moscow and Kiev by an African delegation.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on May 16 that the governments of Russia and Ukraine had agreed to receive an African delegation, whose goal is to find a peaceful solution to the Ukrainian conflict. The matter has already been discussed with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who have each agreed to receive the African delegation in Moscow and Kiev. In addition Ramaphosa said he had informed U.S. President Joe Biden about it, while other South African officials say that Washington and London have signaled their “cautious support” for the peace plan.

Citing unnamed sources, TASS said such visits could take place even before the Second Africa-Russia Economic and Humanitarian Forum begins in St. Petersburg on July 26-29.
