May 16, 2023 (EIRNS) The Arab Republic of Syria attended its first Arab League meeting in 12 years, participating yesterday in the Economic and Social Council meeting that was held as part of the preparatory meetings for the summit, to be convened on May 19.

Upon arriving at the King Abdulaziz Airport in Jeddah yesterday, Syrian Foreign Minister Fasial Mekdad addressed the auspicious occasion, stating: “The title of the summit is the Joint Arab action, and we are looking forward to the future. We are happy to be in Saudi Arabia.” He said there will be an opportunity “to tell our Arab brothers that we don’t look at the past, rather, we look at the future. There are many challenges to be discussed.”

Syria was suspended from the Arab League in November 2011, after its President, Bashar al-Assad, began to oppose the increasingly violent, terrorist demonstrations, steered by British and American intelligence, which were seeking to overthrow the government. Al Qaeda and ISIS forces were built up to fight Assad, and at one-point in 2015, seventy percent of Syria’s land area was under the control of terrorist armies. At that time, Saudi Arabia gave aid to the destabilization.
