Bashar Al-Assad at Arab League Summit: ‘Historic Opportunity’ to Address Crises

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was welcomed at the May 19 Arab League member nation meeting. This is his first time back since Syria was suspended after the U.S. attack started in 2011. He spoke of today being an “historic opportunity,” in his remarks to the gathering, also noting that Syria would always belong to the Arab world.

As reported by Al Jazeera, al-Assad said, “I hope that it marks the beginning of a new phase of Arab action for solidarity among us, for peace in our region, development and prosperity instead of war and destruction.” He specifically called for non-interference in the internal affairs of nations.
