Bremen Elections Are Long-Overdue Slap in the Face to Greens

The elections for new parliament in the northwestern German city-state of Bremen featured two relevant developments for the rest of Germany: 1) a big slap in the face of the Greens which lost almost a third of the vote they received in elections five years ago, and 2) a strong vote for the Citizens at Rage (BIW) party of deep discontent with the established parties.

As for the Greens, the party leadership’s embrace of the war drive, the big pile of new corruption scandals, and nepotism at the Green-led German Ministry of Economics definitely drove the loss of votes yesterday, including a migration of voters to the Social Democrats which won the election with 29.8%. Most indicative for the erosion of the Greens is the fact that their loss of votes was highest among those 18-24 years old, with −14%.
