British Prime Minister Sunak Is Leading the World Support for Ukraine

The Financial Times yesterday bragged that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is the leading international figure sponsoring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his regime. They report Sunak’s smug remarks after the G7 meeting, that Zelenskyy was pictured standing “shoulder to shoulder” with G7 leaders in an image that “sent a very strong message.” Speaking at a defense conference in London, Sunak said Russia’s strategy of “waiting it out ...  for people [in the west] to get tired, bored ...  is not going to work.… We are now leading a conversation with allies about what longer-term multilateral and bilateral security agreements we can put in place with Ukraine.”

The FT reports that “Western support for Kiev has hardened, with increasing talk of providing western defense guarantees to Ukraine.” This includes the U.S. approval of sending F-16s, and “the U.K., the first country to provide Kyiv with modern battle tanks, also sent long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine ahead of its long-expected counteroffensive.”
