China's Xi: Synergy of Eurasian Economic Union and Belt & Road

On the same day that China’s President Xi Jinping met with Russian Prime MInister Mikhail Mishustin in Beijing, he addressed, by video, the Eurasian Economic Union’s plenary session in Moscow. As reported by Xinhua, Xi noted that the world today is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century. He said that it is the broad consensus of the international community to uphold genuine multilateralism and promote coordinated development across regions. He proceeded to explain why the synergy between the Belt and Road Initiative and the Eurasian Economic Union can and should be deepened

Xi noted that Eurasia is the region with the largest population, the largest number of countries, and the most diverse civilizations in the world. It has a profound impact on the world, one needed in dealing with the present turbulence. In this light, he had put forward the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative, to build a world of lasting peace, universal security, and common prosperity — a “beautiful” world.
