Another major setback for the Green Party in Germany: Coalition partner FDP blocked the so-called “heating bill” which mandated a ban on fossil-based heating systems in new buildings and in replacement of obsolete ones. The bill included a profiling of heating habits of Germans and fully fossil-free home-heating systems by 2045.

The plan, a baby of Green Economy Minister Robert Habeck, was seen as a measure “for the rich only” and was criticized by both FDP and SPD coalition partners. The FDP has now prevented the plan from going to the Bundestag this week as planned, in order to have it reviewed. At this point, it will be virtually impossible to send it to Parliament before the summer recess, during which time anything can happen.
