Day Two of the meeting in Hiroshima of the Group of Seven nations, plus heads of state of eight guest countries, had a three ring circus character.
Ukraine Pres. Zelensky flew in, with a dramatic disembarkation from his French government jet, and then proceeded to have individual meetings with heads of state, including Italian Prime Minister Meloni, Indian Prime Minister Mohdi, and UK Prime Minister Sunak. Tomorrow, the final day, Zelensky is to address the whole group.
The newly OK’d commitment from NATO nations to provide F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, and expedited pilot training was praised by a gaggle of Western leaders, including the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, as well as President Biden.
The economic warfare focus of the G7 was announced: to counter the “economic coercion” coming from any country—meaning, without naming names, China, Russia and any collaborating nations.
This theme was identified in several places in the raft of statements issued today. In particular, a new G7 Commission against Economic Coercion is to be established.
The Summit document was released today: the 44-page “G7 Hiroshima Leaders’ Communique,” which has 65 points. Plus the Communique has six lengthy “Reference Documents,” whose topics are: 1) “Leaders’ Hiroshima Vision on Nuclear Disarmament,” 2) Ukraine, 3) “Energy Economy Action Plan,” 4) “Economic Resilience and Economic Security,” 5) “Resilient Global Food Security,” and 6) “Factsheet on the G7 partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment.”
