Fast-track NATO membership for Ukraine remains off the table, but plans are afoot to upgrade Ukraine’s relationship with the alliance at the Vilnius summit on July 11-12. Euractiv reports that the scheme under development is the upgrade of the NATO-Ukraine Commission into a Ukraine-NATO Council. This idea has gained traction and would be a signal to also show an upgrade in relations, Euractiv’s anonymous NATO sources said. It would be the first move in “enhancing the political partnership” between the alliance and Kiev since the war started and Ukraine applied for membership. NATO foreign ministers are set to meet in Oslo, next week, where they are expected to discuss the shape and timeline for the new council.
