Arlacchi Warns of Risks of a ‘Frozen Conflict’ in Ukraine

In an article written for Italian daily Il Fatto Quotidiano and made available to EIR, former director of the UN Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention, and former Member of the European Parliament Pino Arlacchi, warns of the risks of a “frozen conflict” in Ukraine, as a strategy outlined by factions in Washington.

Fifteen months into the war, it has become a fixed-position war. In a fixed-position war, it is the opponents’ respective in-depth capability that is the key for victory. Russia has it, whereas Ukraine has already gone over the peak of its capabilities. The third objective—to turn Ukraine into a devastated NATO bastion—is being achieved.

“The U.S. military has already been advising for months to follow alternative paths to military victory, because at this point it can no longer be ruled out that the opposite of what Western media and governments desire is what will happen: a continuation in Russia of the U.S. fiascos in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria.
