Battle Rages over CUNY Commencement Speaker's Denunciation of Israeli Apartheid

On May 12, a commencement address was given at the City University of New York (CUNY) by Yemeni student Fatima Mohammed, who had been elected by her fellow students to deliver the address. In her speech, she criticized the apartheid policies of the Israeli government.

Two weeks later, the word began to get around in AIPAC-related circles that this had taken place, and a torrent of rage was unleashed against Ms. Mohammed and CUNY. Recipients of AIPAC largesse, such as Jose Vega’s favorite congressman, Richie Torres, went on the warpath. Torres bellowed on Twitter, “Imagine being so crazed by hatred for Israel as a Jewish State that you make it the subject of your commencement speech at a law school graduation.” In response, AIPAC patted Richie on the head with a tweet saying, “Thank you Ritchie Torres for your moral clarity in rejecting baseless slander of our ally Israel and speaking out in support of the Jewish state.”
