Foreign Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told the media on June 8 that India, as host of the upcoming September 9-10 summit of the G20, would not extend an invitation to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyyy to attend and address that meeting. The reason? Ukraine is not a member of the G20; G20 summits are for members.
“In our view, G20 participation is for members of G20 and for the countries and organizations whom we have invited to the G20, and that list we had declared as soon as we assumed the Presidency of the G20 [in December 2022]. It is not something … which we have discussed with anybody.”
Asked about the likelihood of achieving a final communiqué from the summit, Jaishankar said: “Diplomats are still working at it. So, I don’t want to predict … but diplomacy is a business for optimistic people.”
