The Russian government of Kherson, formerly part of Ukraine, decided that there will be three official languages, Russian, Ukrainian and Crimean-Tatar. Governor Vladimir Saldo posted yesterday on Telegram that Russian citizens have a “right to the free choice of language in communication, upbringing, culture, and art.... Safeguarding people’s cultural, spiritual, and historical values” is a priority in Kherson and other parts of Russia.
Two months ago, the Russian Education Ministry announced, as reported in RT, that students in the four newly-joined regions—Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye—can study Ukrainian in schools, either as their native language, or as an additional course. Also, a new Ukrainian-language textbook was produced for the elementary school level.
