Microchip producer TSMC has updated its expected 2023 sales, which it now anticipates will decline 10% from 2022’s, rather than only 5% predicted a few months ago. While there is an extremely high demand for chips engineered specifically for machine-learning applications, overall demand is declining, in part due to reduced orders from China.
The United States has attempted to bolster its domestic microchip production, through the CHIPS and Science Act, but TSMC’s production site at Arizona is facing delays that will push back commercial production to 2025. Why? They can’t find skilled workers.
