China Warns U.S. and Others That Sanctions Policy Will Backfire

Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Xie Feng, speaking at the Aspen Security Forum on July 19, warned that “The Chinese people will not remain indifferent, and the Chinese government will not sit idly by,” as the U.S. continues to increase the illegal unilateral sanctions on the country. Global Times reports that “the Biden administration is reportedly preparing an investment screening mechanism designed to cut the amount of U.S. money invested in Chinese entities involved in areas including semiconductors, quantum computing and artificial intelligence (AI). Also, the U.S. Commerce Department is planning to update some export controls to make it more difficult for Chinese companies to obtain AI-related chips from companies such as Nvidia.... China has realized that communication alone will not stop the U.S. from stepping up pressure on it, and it’s time to try a different tack....
