Hunter Biden thought he had worked out a plea deal on charges related to taxes and firearms that would result in no jail time and protection against being charged for other crimes, but Judge Maryellen Noreika had other ideas. She rejected the proposed plea agreement, which she realized was hiding the level of immunity Biden was to be afforded.

Biden was hoping to have immunity against additional accusations, such as not having registered as a foreign agent, although this situation was somewhat hidden in the arrangements. Judge Noreika brought it out into the open and canned the deal. In the process, the DOJ claimed that it was still investigating Biden and that other charges could be brought, such as under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, while Biden’s lawyers exclaimed that they considered FARA immunity to be part of the deal.
