Polish Paranoia Grows, Russia Warns of New Stage in Conflict

Ongoing news of the failed Ukrainian counteroffensive has led to the situation where those wanting to keep the war going are looking for new avenues to exploit. One of these appears to be Poland, especially after the recent deployment of the Wagner group mercenaries to Belarus—right on Poland’s border.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki issued a warning July 29 in which he claimed that over 100 mercenaries of the Wagner Group have moved towards the Suwalki Gap, a stretch of Polish border with Belarus between Kaliningrad and Ukraine. This move “is certainly a step towards a further hybrid attack on Polish territory,” Morawiecki said at a press conference during his visit to the Bumar-Labedy military plant in southern Poland. Morawiecki also blamed Russia and Belarus for the wave of immigrants flooding into his country over the recent two years, and claimed that these immigrants will be used as a cover for an invasion into Polish territory. It’s not clear that Morawiecki provided any actual evidence for his allegations.

On July 27, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak attended the opening ceremony of a new military unit, which also featured the establishment of a HIMARS Academy training Polish soldiers. Poland is buying 500 HIMARS launchers, an incredible number, more than are in the possession of the U.S. military.
