Russian Ambassador in Rome Asserts, We Are Open to a Diplomatic Solution

Two days after the meeting between U.S. President Biden and Papal envoy Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, and six days before July 27 meeting between Biden and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Washington, the new Russian ambassador in Rome, Alexey Paramonov, wrote a long op-ed for the daily La Repubblica, published today, in which he stated that Moscow is open to a non-military solution for Ukraine and invited Rome to play a role. One does not need to be a conspiracy theorist to notice the coincidence among the three actions—and the fact that a mainstream publication such as La Repubblica (owned by the same publishers as London’s The Economist) broke the Russophobia guidelines by publishing the ambassador’s article. Alexey Vladimirovich Paramonov started by acknowledging the common heritage of Russia and Italy in shaping history and culture in Eurasia. He then reconstructed the process of deterioration in relations between Russia and the West, culminating with the 2014 coup in Kiev and Russia’s 2022 special military operation. After SMO started, which for Russia was inevitable as a duty to defend the Donbass population, “the panorama of bilateral relationships has changed so far as to become unrecognizable,” Paramonov wrote.

Italy adopted a hostile policy, but “it is obvious that one cannot expect Rome’s foreign policy to change, because Italy is firmly inserted in the system of Euro-Atlantic structures.…
