Meredith Whittaker, the President of encrypted messaging platform Signal, stood up for privacy in an interview on British television. In response to a UK government bill, supposedly based on taking on such problems as child pornography, she pointed out, repeatedly, the basics of mathematics — either you have security, or you don’t. If you break it for one purpose, it will be gone entirely. She was adamant that Signal will not break encryption.

In mid- to late 2021, Apple put forward a proposed way to do mass scanning for child sexual abuse material, while still maintaining privacy. Their complex system — which had many loopholes and weaknesses — met with such pushback, that they put the plan on hold.
