Citing a report by a Slovakian think tank, GLOBSEC, the Washington Post writes that around 30% of Ukraine or more than 67,000 square miles has been in severe conflict over the recent 30 years, and has a preponderance of mines and cluster bombs. They report that farmers in some of the heavily mined areas, such as Kherson, have even started rigging their tractors with armored plates in order to plant their harvests this year.
Estimates for demining in the country paint an even more bleak picture. The World Bank estimates that demining Ukraine will cost $37 billion over the next 10 years. But some experts say that the job is so massive that it would take the approximately 500 teams working at their current mode of operation a total of 757 years to complete.
