India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi stopped off for an official visit to Greece on his return from the BRICS meeting in South Africa Aug. 25. He was given an enthusiastic welcome by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis who said during a meeting with Modi, “We take great pleasure in deepening our strategic relationship; Greece and India are growing closer … with ample potential for further collaboration spanning economics, defense, tourism, culture, and addressing climate change.... Our primary goal is to double bilateral trade with India within the next four years.” Mitsotakis also expressed gratitude to Modi for his support amid the wildfires afflicting the country, according to Greek daily, Kathimerini.
Modi extended condolences on his own behalf and on behalf of the Indian populace for the lives lost in the wildfires, and underscored that a cordial relationship is only natural between the two countries, given their ancient civilizations. Calling for elevating the Greece-India relationship to a strategic level, Modi added that the two countries had signed an agricultural production agreement earlier in the day.
