Mariupol experienced devastating battles last year, including the months-long holdout of the armed forces of Ukraine and Azov militants in the Azovstal steel factory, sitting in the heart of the city. Following the Ukrainian surrender and Russia’s occupation, Russia has been steadily working to rebuild the city, and in some cases to rebuild it better than it had been before the start of the conflict.
Russia’s Military Construction Complex has completed construction on a new 1,100-student school in Mariupol that will open September 1. Entire new residential areas are also being built.
