Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, addressing a conference of Turkish ambassadors in Ankara today, stressed that Türkiye will remain determined to end the fighting, and bring peace, between Russia and Ukraine. “We will stubbornly and persistently continue to strive for the end of the Ukraine war and the establishment of peace,” he said, reported Anadolu Agency. Türkiye’s main priority will be to preserve calm in the Black Sea region and block attempts to jeopardize it, Fidan stressed. “We will continue our contacts with all parties for the revival of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which affects every household in the world,” said Fidan, stressing that Türkiye is “the only actor that can do this.”
Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had convened his cabinet which, Turkish news outlets reported, aimed to discuss potential solutions to reinstate the agreement, and that details of Erdogan’s phone call with Putin on Aug. 2 regarding the matter would also be shared. According to the Hurriyet Daily News, Fidan had engaged in significant phone calls with his U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba in an effort to extend the crucial grain deal.
