In another ill-bred attempt to counter China and the BRICS on the African continent, Europe is betting on an international UN-co-sponsored climate conference held in Nairobi, Kenya Sept. 4-6. Germany is sending Parliamentary State Secretary of the Development Ministry Bärbel Kofler (SPD), and the Commissioner for International Climate Policy in the Federal Foreign Office Jennifer Morgan (formerly at the top of the NGO Greenpeace). Morgan in particular stands for the most obsessive aspects of German “climate foreign policy.”
Two other NGOs play a role in defining the German position. The summit is an opportunity for the continent to “actively drive important solutions itself,” Kerstin Opfer (a revealing name: Opfer means sacrifice), an expert on energy policy and civil society in Africa at the environment and development NGO Germanwatch, told the DPA news agency. “If African countries can show that the expansion of renewable energies and simultaneous economic progress are possible, then that would have the potential to motivate other countries to follow suit.”
