After Seven Years, Sudan and Iran Reestablish Diplomatic Relations

Sudan and Iran have reestablished diplomatic relations after seven years. Their rapprochement is an obvious result of the rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran on March 10, 2023. Iran’s relations with both the Saudis and Sudan had been cut in 2016 after Iranian protesters stormed Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Iran. The act itself was a reaction to Saudi Arabia’s execution of a prominent Shi’a cleric and 46 others. Iran is a largely Shi’a country.

The Sudanese Foreign Ministry issued a statement yesterday saying: “Both countries agreed to take the necessary measures to open embassies in the two countries soon.” Iranian state media said, in a parallel statement: “The two sides agreed to enhance cooperation on different areas which can fulfill the interests of both nations and ensure security and stability in the region.”
