Argentine President in Beijing for Belt and Road Forum, Meets with Xi Jinping

Argentine President Alberto Fernández arrived in Beijing today and was greeted at the Great Hall of the People by President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, after which he attended a gala dinner held for all the foreign dignitaries who are attending the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. Fernández will have a bilateral meeting with Xi tomorrow and will later speak during a panel at the forum which Xi will also address.

Fernández traveled to Beijing from Shanghai where he had a very warm meeting with his good friend Dilma Rousseff, president of the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB), accompanied by other top NDB officials and members of Fernández’s own delegation. Their discussion focused on Argentina’s future membership in BRICS and its desire to become a member of the NDB, for which Fernández submitted an official membership application to Rousseff, which will then be presented to the NDB Executive Board for its consideration. It’s unclear how long the approval process will take.
