Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed concern about the U.S. decision to send an aircraft carrier strike group to the Mediterranean to assist Israel in its assault on Gaza. At a briefing today with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, Erdogan asked: “What will the aircraft carrier of the U.S. do near Israel, why do they come? What will the boats around it and aircraft on it do? They will hit Gaza and around, and take steps for serious massacres there.… We call on all influential actors in the region to assume responsibility for the establishment of peace, acting on the principle that ‘there are no losers in a just peace.’” Erdogan said that any step that could escalate tension, cause more bloodshed, or exacerbate the problems in the region must be avoided.
