Last night, besides bombing Gaza, Israel provocatively hit areas in southern Lebanon. “Only” four deaths have been reported so far, about 1-2% of the deaths in Gaza on a given day, but the clear signal is that Israel will fight on multiple fronts. The version told by IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Richard Hecht today is that Hezbollah had fired two anti-tank missiles, which Israel responded to by dropping bombs on southern Lebanon.
He elaborated: “Our rules of engagement on the border are very clear right now: Anyone who comes near the fence will be shot.” How near to the fence was not specified, but it was clear that the people being shot will be inside Lebanon. He underlined his message, that Lebanon needs to ask itself: “Do they want to risk their future for Hamas? People in Lebanon have to be asking themselves that.”
