Haaretz Op-Ed Queries Whether Israel's Assault on Gaza Will Push It Into the Moral Abyss

In the mad rush to corral all Western opinion behind a unified policy in the Israel-Palestine crisis, some are attempting to imply that Israel itself is united in this regard. But, as Helga Zepp-LaRouche has asked: Which Israel are we being called upon to support? An Oct. 23 op-ed in Israel’s Haaretz newspaper points out precisely such a glaring reality.

On Oct. 23, Haaretz ran an op-ed titled, “In Gaza, Israel Is Racing to the Moral Abyss” by Michael Sfard, an Israeli human rights lawyer. Sfard argues that Hamas’ brutal attack on Oct. 7 has ignited a fire of hatred within Israel, which, “like nuclear fuel, it has spiraled us on our way to a moral hell.”

“When the political and military leadership loses all restraint and approves ideas about a massive blow to civilians, we’re creating a society where the process of stripping away the humanity of the people on the other side of the border has been completed. And when that happens, the inferno is near,” he writes. Sfard goes on to condemn the crackdown on any internal opposition to the policy of collective punishment of Palestinians, asking: “How will we define the regime of a country that treats its critics that way? I know how not to define it.”
