The new U.S. Ambassador to Rome, former Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, interfered in Italian foreign policy by lying in an interview with Corriere della Sera, that Italy got no advantage from its membership in the Belt and Road Initiative, thereby indirectly pushing for Italy to exit its 2019 Memorandum with China.
Asked why the U.S. government “considers relationships with Beijing so dangerous,” Markell jesuitically replied that “It will be Italy to decide what to do with that MOU,” immediately adding that “I just notice statistics show that it has not at all worked. Indeed, other European countries in the meantime have recorded larger increments in their trade with Beijing.''
