Last year the U.S.’s national debt grew by a record $2.2 trillion. On Sept. 18 of this year, the Treasury reported that the amount of money borrowed by the federal government to cover operating expenses stood at $33.04 trillion. At that point, it had taken the U.S. only three months to add the last $1 trillion to the debt.
