UNSC Fails to Adopt Russian Resolution on Gaza

The UN Security Council rejected the Russian Humanitarian Resolution on Gaza on Monday. (Another meeting is today; Brazil plans to provide another resolution, reports CGTN.)

The US, Britain, France and Japan voted against, claiming that the resolution did not condemn Hamas. Six countries abstained. China, Gabon, Mozambique, UAE and Russia voted in favor. With three vetoes, and without securing a majority vote in any event, the resolution was rejected.

UN Russian permanent representative Nebenzia commented: “We believe that today’s vote by members of the Security Council is very significant. It clearly demonstrated who actually advocates an immediate truce, an end to the indiscriminate bombing of the Gaza Strip and provision of unconditional humanitarian assistance to the population of the enclave, and who continues to stubbornly block the Council’s unified signal by persecuting narrowly selfish political goals.”

The Council once again found itself hostage to the selfish aspirations of Western delegations, Nebenzia said. “This is the only reason why he was unable to send a clear, strong collective signal aimed at de-escalation. But we are talking about the largest outbreak of violence in the Middle East in recent decades,” he said.

Previously, in presenting the draft resolution calling for immediate ceasefire, Nebenzia had stated: We unequivocally condemn the acts of extreme brutality, killings and the horrifying scale of violence. Any killings and violence against peaceful civilians, both Israeli and Palestinian citizens, is inadmissible. https://twitter.com/RussiaUN/status/1712966637131809279
