A group of 160 Chilean academics, the majority from the University of Chile, issued a statement Nov. 4 expressing their “profound consternation at the genocide being carried out by the Israeli state in the Gaza Strip.” As reported by the University of Chile radio station, they expressed their complete support for statements by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel, saying the attack “didn’t occur in a vacuum,” but in the context of 56 years of an “axphyxiating occupation.”
