The government of South Africa announced today that President Cyril Ramaphosa has convened an extraordinary virtual meeting of the five BRICS member states and the six governments invited to become new members as of Jan. 1, 2024 to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, specifically the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. According to Iran’s IRNA press service today, the meeting was convened at the urging of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

The BRICS meeting is one of several taking place in the recent period, or planned, reflecting the growing anger and frustration among nations of the Global South, particularly in Southwest Asia, over the U.S.-backed Israeli genocide of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip which has killed over 13,000 people. Rage is directed at U.S. President Biden for failing to stop the slaughter of Palestinians.
