The international outcry over the Gaza crisis is obviously having an effect, both inside Israel and upon the Biden Administration, which is increasing the pressure for a ceasefire and political solution, according to commentary published by Israel’s largest circulation publication, Yedioth Ahronoth .
Orly Azoulai, a very senior journalist, and Yedioth’s former Washington bureau chief, wrote today that the international outcry is fueling demands for an end to the conflict. She claims that President Joe Biden is seeking “a political settlement, because there is no military solution,” especially because his “popularity is plummeting mainly among his own party…. The left-liberal wing of his party is furious with him for expressing unilateral support for Israel and ignoring the plight of Gaza.” She asserts that his administration is seeking the cooperation of Europe and Saudi Arabia in drafting some sort of plan.
She then writes that there should be an immediate “ceasefire to allow an exchange of prisoners, all for all, trucks of Palestinian prisoners for the kidnapped in Gaza.” This would have to be followed by temporarily transferring control over Gaza to several Palestinian factions, which it is hoped would become the basis for negotiating a two-state solution. She concludes: “Many more rivers of killing and tears will be shed before that happens, but it must happen—because you can’t live forever on the blood.”
