Egyptian Company To Build Industrial City in Tanzania

The large Egyptian multinational Elsewedy Electric, through its subsidiary Elsewedy Industrial Development, has announced that it will construct an industrial city in Tanzania, reported the Africa-based Construction Review platform. Dubbed the Elsewedy Industrial City, it is expected to attract $400 million in investment and create a potential for 50,000 jobs. The project reflects the paradigm of infrastructure-driven development that is taking hold in Africa, as well as the role of Egypt, a candidate member of the BRICS, in participating in the development of Africa.

The city will be built along the new standard gauge railway (SGR) now under construction, which is serving as a new development corridor. The city will be along the section of the line that is nearing completion and will be some 45 minutes by train from the port city of Dar es Salaam. It will be an integrated industrial zone, and the city is also expected to cover an area of 2.6 million sq. meters (1 sq. mi.) and include residential areas and amenities. It will be located 15 km from the Kwala Dry Port and the Ruvu station on the 2,000-km SGR. The project was presented at the African Investment Forum of Egyptian industries based in Tanzania, which was held by the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones.
