Western elites had better listen up. That charge, by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in a press conference after meeting with his cabinet Oct. 31, is shared by the leadership and peoples of the great majority of nations of the world.
“Our goal is to get our region out of this whirlpool it has been dragged into,” President Erdogan stressed. Ending the massacre in Gaza is Türkiye’s top priority.
He proposed that “to this end, a ceasefire should be declared first and then the path to a permanent peace should be cleared,” and reiterated his insistence that an “International Peace Conference on Palestine-Israel … with the participation of all the relevant parties” is the most appropriate platform clearing that path to peace.
Erdogan also argued that “the establishment of a new security mechanism in cooperation with the regional actors is necessary,” and offered that Türkiye is “ready to take responsibility if such a step is taken.”
He ripped into those protecting those committing the massacre or standing silently by as Gaza’s people are being killed.
