Ghana is seeking funding for building a nuclear power plant. This was announced at the Ministerial Conference on the International Framework for Nuclear Energy Cooperation (IFNEC) that took place held in Accra from Nov. 1-3, bringing together ministers and officials from across Africa.

Professor Samuel Boakye Dampare, the Director General of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, said the country has made progress in nuclear education and regulation in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy agency. Around 30 doctoral students have already received training in nuclear engineering and related sciences abroad. Ghana is now considering whether to opt for medium-size or larger nuclear power plants. The government also established a Nuclear Regulatory Authority in 2015 and has erected a School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences, in collaboration with the University of Ghana.

William D. Magwood, the Director General of the Nuclear Energy Agency, and Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, the Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, both emphasized the importance of nuclear energy for Ghana.
