Hungary’s Orbán at Turkic States’ Summit for Belt and Road Projects

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán arrived in Kazakhstan’s capital of Astana today to discuss bilateral cooperation with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. He will also be an observer at the summit of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) on Nov. 3, which brings together the leaders of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Türkiye, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. Increasing cooperation among the Turkic states is on Hungary’s agenda, which favors the Belt and Road perspective.

As for the agenda of the OTS, Amir Bashbayev, head of the analysis and forecasting group at the Institute of Foreign Policy Studies at Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry, pointed out in remarks to today’s Astana Times, the significance of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) for the current cooperation. It includes plans for a new alternative route through the Kyrgyz Republic, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan that is being considered by China.
