Pope Francis argued for an end to the fighting in Gaza and for implementing the two-state agreement signed at Oslo in 1993, as part of a lengthy interview featured on Italy’s RAI, broadcast last night right after the evening news. He stated: “Two peoples who must live together. With that wise solution: two peoples, two states. The Oslo Accords: two clearly delineated states, and Jerusalem with a special status.”
He added: “In war, one slap provokes another. One strong and the other even stronger, and so it goes on…. Every war is a defeat. Nothing is solved with war. Nothing. Everything is gained with peace, with dialogue.” In this vein, he cast blame on the military-industrial complex: “The most serious problem is still the arms industry. A person who understands investments, who I met in a meeting, told me that, today, investments that generate the most income are weapons factories.”
Both ominously and truthfully, he articulated a heartfelt problem: “The hour is very dark. One cannot find the ability to think clearly.”
