Yedioth Ahronoth Editor Writes, Israel’s Lack of Gaza Plan Undermines Support

The senior editor of Yedioth Ahronoth Nahum Barnea posed some practical issues over Israel’s Gaza invasion, centered around what Israel is going to do with Gaza after the military campaign concludes. He wrote on Nov. 1 that while Israel is carrying out an effective operation in Gaza, “Israel is at a disadvantage in time, resources and international credibility, with no coherent plan on how to get out of it.” Barnea warned that the Israeli public will continue to support the very costly military operations “only if it knows that there is a purpose to this cost, that behind the military effort and the blood of the soldiers there is a solid, achievable, practical plan.”

Unlike previous conflicts, the “public’s trust in the military leadership is at an all-time low, with only half of the population supporting the military and a mere 7% backing the prime minister’s military leadership. An extended war on the outskirts of Gaza is the last thing anyone in Israel wants.”
