Eurozone Has Been in Deflation for More Than a Year but ECB Keeps Raising Rates

In the 20 countries of the Eurozone as a whole, Eurostat’s preliminary estimates indicate a lowering of inflation to 2.9% from 4.3% in the previous month, an improvement of 1.4 points. In Germany, on the other hand, consumer inflation was reportedly at 3% from 4.3% in the previous month, in France at 4.5% from 5.7%, and in Spain, the only case among the major economies of a slight rise, at 3.5% from 3.3% in September.

However, on a yearly basis, inflation data are lower, as the case of Italy shows: from October 2022 to October 2023 prices have increased only 1.8%. De facto, inflation has been flat for over a year, but the European Central Bank has kept raising rates, halting only last week.
