UN Appeals for $1.2 Billion in Aid To Keep Palestinians Alive

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres launched an urgent appeal on Nov. 6 for $1.2 billion to be raised for humanitarian aid for 2.7 million Palestinians: 2.2 million in Gaza and another 500,000 in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. More details were provided by the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) for the occupied Palestinian Territory, in its update of an appeal first issued on Oct. 12.

The OCHA’s flash appeal “outlines the minimum to prevent further loss of life considering the ongoing siege and bombardment of Gaza and the escalating situation in the West Bank.”

The appeal specifies, however, that five operational conditions must change if the humanitarian actors are to be able to implement the plan:

“Humanitarian actors must have safe and sustained access to all people in need, across the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

“Sufficient quantities of fuel must be made available for humanitarian operations.
